Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
